What is a Private Class?

It is a one-on-one session for students who want to further their training by focusing on a specific technique, form or sparring.  Private classes are designed so that the student will receive immediate feedback and advice on how to improve, which helps accelerates the students training. One private class is equivalent to about a week’s worth of regular classes because of the student-teacher ratio.

One of the students who recently took private classes shares how she learned to better visualize her target.  Before, she was striking with her techniques aimlessly, now she is exercising the power of visualization with every technique that she does and it’s helping her to direct her energy toward her target or goal.  Her focus at work and home has improved, she can see her goals clearly and she knows how to achieve them.

Why is visualization important?  Dr. Tae Yun Kim writes in one of her books, Seven Steps to Inner Power, “Visualization is the process of forming a mental image.” and “It is an immaterial activity that takes form first as a mental image, then as a material image.”  So, as students focus on their physical techniques, they are also visualizing their goals.  “No matter what goals you are aiming for in your life, visualization is an essential tool to achieving them.”  Dr. Kim’s words are based on nearly 70 years of experience and application.

Learn more about visualization! Can you visualize your goal and your dreams? Are you ready to make it happen? You can gain many insights and lessons through private classes offered at Jung SuWon!

Here is an excerpt from my book, SEVEN STEPS TO INNER POWER, where I discuss the topic of how to free our minds from limitations:

While the art of Jung SuWon includes a physical form, it is more than a martial art.  It goes far beyond the hard martial art forms that are strictly of foot and fist, and it is not a sport.  Jung SuWon embraces principles and practices that help you develop your whole being - body, mind, and spirit.  Its mental and spiritual aspects are not separate from its physical form.

Let me give you a quick example.  In the martial arts, powerful kicks and punches are worthless unless they are properly directed at an appropriate target with the necessary mental focus.  In other words, physical strength is only as good as mental strength.  All the physical strength in the world will not help if your mind is full of fear.  As students practice, they identify what weaknesses are holding them back.  They learn to fight to free themselves from those limitations so they can express their innate power.  As they cultivate determination, confidence, and strength in practicing martial arts, they also apply those same qualities to the challenges in their daily lives.  They are learning to free themselves from whatever is holding their dreams and their future hostage.

The same principles hold true for you in your everyday life.  You must learn to conquer fear and weakness within you before you can overcome any foe or obstacle outside of yourself.  You must fight for your freedom.  Thus, the purpose of the art of Jung SuWon is to give you practical tools to free yourself from limiting, self-defeating states of mind.

Appreciation is the first step. What if you could only use certain parts of your body? Have you ever thought of what you would do if you had only one arm? Or no arms? Or no sight? Most people who enter my martial arts school are physically healthy and take their bodies for granted. It's for this reason I sometimes have my students try to do what they think are normal everyday things without the use of their legs or arms or eyes. Very quickly they learn how complex the movements of their hand can be, or how precious their sight is. This physical body is a miraculous gift. Utilize it, care for it, strengthen it. Don't waste it or take it for granted.

It's a two way process. For instance, when you encourage your body to go the extra mile around the track, one more mile than you did the day before, you're sending a message to your mind to the effect, "I can grow; I can change; I can break limits." This good message that your mind receives when you demand extra performance from your body then goes on to encourage even better performance, and not just in running. The message will now extend to other areas of your life. "I can grow; I can change; I can break limits" could also help you create new and better procedures at work that result in a promotion or a better position.

Physical Discipline Helps Energize You

Some people say, "I don't have time to worry about physical exercise right now. I have other problems. All I want to do is just get my life together at this point."

As I've said before, body and mind are one. Because your body is connected with your mind, bringing your body under control means bringing your mind under control. And vice versa, of course. Whatever disciplines you apply to your mind affect your body.

In the biblical account of creation, for instance, the first command of creation is "Let there be light: and there was light." The first and most pure form of material manifestation is light.

Likewise, the first and most pure material manifestation of your Silent Master consciousness is light. Light is the link between who you are as pure consciousness and who you are as matter. Pure light is unformed and unshaped like pure consciousness, yet it is the medium that shapes and forms itself into material manifestation. It is the link between the formed and the unformed. The candle meditation connects you with this aspect of yourself energizing this inner aspect of your being by focusing on it.

Just as you purify your thinking by choosing what thoughts and words you will concentrate on, you must purify the images that you visualize. You can use the previous six part meditation that we used for concentrating on an idea to use for your visualization. Instead of dwelling on the words that describe an idea you want to manifest, dwell on the picture of your desired manifestation. During that time, allow no other pictures to enter your mind.

When you want a particular manifestation to take place, you may not know exactly how to frame your thinking so that you focus on the right ideas. This is where the right use of visualization can help you. Since visible forms are a picture of your ideas, holding the picture in mind automatically connects you to the idea attached to the picture. Visualizing the picture of the desired manifestation will help propel it into form.

Visualization Captures the Energy of Ideas

As we discussed, material forms are pictures of our ideas in consciousness. It is important to remember that everything you see materially existed first as an idea that you entertained. When you want to change the picture, then, you must work with the ideas, not only with the picture.
