(Above) Dr. Tae Yun Kim, CEO and founder of Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions, accepts her positions as Senior Advisor to the National Unification Advisory Council (NUAC) in San Francisco.
The mission of the NUAC is, “Creating a foundation for a ‘peaceful and prosperous Korean Peninsula’.” The NUAC was founded by the South Korean Legislature in 1980 to advise the President of Korea and the Korean Legislature on the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, formulating and implementing policies on Democratic and peaceful unification through the consensus of political parties and the public.
Reunification of North and South Korea is a mission close to Dr. Tae Yun Kim’s heart because when just 5 years old, Dr. Tae Yun Kim went through the Korean War, a war which didn’t end with a treaty but a truce that split Korea into two – South Korea and North Korea.
During the the Korean war, as bombs dropped and families fled, Dr Kim’s family abandoned her, because, as a girl, she was just another mouth to feed. She later watched as her one friend, a little girl who had sought to help save the young Dr. Kim, was blown up in front of her.
Dr. Kim has said that while watching her friend die and the village burn, she experienced a moment of insight. She thanked God she was alive and vowed to cherish life. Her abominable spirit was awakened. Her Life mottoes began formulating – “Cherish every living breath” and “He can do, she can do, why not me!”
It is hard to imagine anyone could go through war at such a young age, and not be scared for life, but Dr. Kim overcame the abandonment and the extreme adversities she faced as a child in the Korean war, and as a little girl in male dominated 1950’s Korea, to not just survive but reach incredible successes – becoming the first female Korean Tae Kwon Do Black Belt, then Grandmaster. She emigrated to the to the USA in 1968, and there overcame discrimination against Asians and women to not just grow a successful martial art, Jung SuWon, but to also go on to found, and lead as CEO, a super successful Silicon Valley technology company, Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions.
As she accepted her position as Senior Advisor to the NUAC, Dr. Tae Yun Kim wore a black, peach, green, cocktail length bandage dress embellished with hundreds of Swarovski Crystals. Green in particular, Dr. Kim teaches in her book, “The First Element”, is a color of growth and harmony.
