The Distractions That Divide Us

Here is an excerpt from my book, SEVEN STEPS TO INNER POWER, where I discuss DISTRACTIONS:

Tae Yun Kim

Engaging your body and mind to act as one takes determination and concentration.  For instance, say you have set a goal of winning a marathon race.  Your mind says, “This is an important priority.  I want to win.  I want to use all my spare time building up my speed and endurance every day.”  If you nevertheless insist on eating improperly, partying all night long, skipping workouts “just this one time,” accepting invitations to do things that distract you and exhaust your time and energy, and on and on, is your body at one with your mind?  How likely are you to succeed under those circumstances?  Clearly, if winning a marathon race is a high priority for you, if you truly want to win, you will have to take control of your body and make all your physical activity conform to your goal.  Your body and mind must be working together as one.

Tae Yun Kim

Say you are in college and have met someone you’re interested in dating.  Just thinking of her makes your heart beat faster.  You say, “I can’t wait to take this girl out.”  Meanwhile, you have an exam coming up and you need to study.  You sit down, you look at your books, and you read over your notes for hours.  Yet all this time your mind is thinking, “I can’t wait to convince her to let me take her out.  We’ll have such a great time…”  Your mind is somewhere else.

Tae Yun KimThe next day, you take your exam and are surprised that you performed so poorly.  “Wow,” you say to yourself.  “I studied so hard, but I didn’t know the answers.  What happened?”  What happened is that you didn’t bring your body and mind together ot act as one.  Your mind and your actions were on two different tracks.  Your mind wasn’t supporting your goals and wasn’t aligned with your physical actions.

Tae Yun Kim

Here’s another example.  Say you are the best salesperson at your company.  You understand your product, the market, and your potential customers thoroughly and you know your presentation inside and out.  But what happens when your fiancé tells you that he or she wants to break off your engagement and want to be with your best friend instead?  Your mind becomes blurred, you can’t remember important details, and your performance drops to your lowest levels ever.  Why?  You are divided.  Your body and mind are not working together as one.  Of course, it’s natural to be upset when something like that happens, but if you don’t get a handle on it and keep your obsessive mind from fixating on this for months on end, that huge distraction will drag down every other part of your life.

Ask for Insight and Direction

Here is an excerpt from my book, SEVEN STEPS TO INNER POWER, where I discuss how to ask for insight and direction:   Tae Yun Kim

When you are experiencing a conflict between your mind and emotions, you can turn to your Silent Master Consciousness. It operates over both your conscious and subconscious mind:  “Your Silent Master is completely aware, infinitely Intelligent and ready to give you all the insight, information, and direction you need to fulfill your dreams, ambitions, and goals.”
 Tae Yun Kim
You can affirm that you and your Silent Master are one. Then, by simply knowing you have this unlimited awareness and intelligence available to you, you can ask for information regarding your obstacle, whatever it may be.  Asking is as simple as mentally posing the question to yourself and expecting the answer to come into your conscious awareness. However long or short a time it takes, the answer will surely come. You may be led to people, books, or situations that will ultimately assist you, and you will get your answer.

Tae Yun Kim
Your real self already knows its freedom from mental and emotional limitations. Therefore, you can insist on experiencing the feelings of your real self. These are always positive feelings that you can claim as your own.  In addition, you can consciously strive to entertain thoughts that bring you the most positive feelings.
 Tae Yun Kim

There is a good reason why positive emotions such as joy, optimism, love, compassion, affection, hope, and gratitude help you achieve your goals. They bring forth the presence of your Silent Master and therefore have creative power.  A positive mental attitude simply means that you are free from conflicting thoughts and emotions. You feel emotions of joy, peace, and confidence because you expect success. You feel strong because you realize that your real self has power, and you have removed (or are removing) all negative thoughts and emotions that could obstruct your manifestation.

Making Mistakes is Essential to Progress

Here is an excerpt from my book, SEVEN STEPS TO INNER POWER, where I discuss the topic of Mistakes.

Making Mistakes is Essential to Progress

Tae Yun Kim

Willingness to learn from mistakes is the backbone of all progress. How many mistakes do you think Alexander Graham Bell made in inventing the first telephone that connected one room in his house to another? Now technology allows us to see the person we’re speaking with on the other side of the globe. How many mistakes did the engineers make while developing this technology? Who cares? The object is to succeed, not to count your mistakes.

Mistakes are part of the natural process of striving to make constant improvements in your life.  Mistakes are essential to your progress.  If fact, without mistakes, you can’t be successful.  The minute you decide to work toward achieving a goal that is important to you, you will make mistakes. How did we humans get the idea that to be perfect we couldn’t make mistakes? Never making a mistake does not make us perfect.  Never repeating a mistake after we learn from it is as perfect as we need to be.

Tae Yun Kim

In the face of a mistake, stay motivated and remind yourself that is is part of your path to success – that making mistakes is essential because it helps you to become better and better as you practice.  Imagine the freedom you’ll feel when you don’t have to worry about defending or hiding your mistakes. Experience the increased energy that comes from this freedom!  Welcome your mistakes into your consciousness as your friends and teachers.

Tae Yun Kim

If you do that are are determined to learn from mistakes, you will also gain a precious gift: wisdom.  There is a big difference between knowledge and wisdom.  Knowledge is something you gain by looking up information on the internet, in an encyclopedia, or in books or other resources.  Wisdom, however, comes from experience.  You don’t gain wisdom by reading or absorbing informaiton; you only gain it thorugh experience.  When I interview applicants for a job at one of my businesses, I always look at how much real-world experience they have and what hardships and challenges they have had to face and overcome.  I find that those who are willing to learn from mistakes and take on new challenges develop a resiliency and inner strength that gives them the edge on the job and in their personal lives.

Fear of Making Mistakes is Mental Laziness

Part of our fear of mistakes is pure laziness. What’s the worst thing that will happen if you make a mistake? You will have to abandon that course of action and take another, which means, in short, a lot of work. It means you will have to think of another course of action. You may have to be creative. You may have to expend energy in thinking, evaluating, planning. You may have to resist emotions such as despair, futility, rejection, and fear.

Tae Yun Kim

If you are mentally lazy, making mistakes will be one of the best excuses you have for giving up, for deciding that maybe your goal isn’t so important after all. What a senseless waste that would be. Why expect so little out of life and out of yourself?

Mistakes are not harmful in and of themselves. What is harmful is our attitude toward mistakes. If you are willing to make mistakes, look at them, regard them as feedback, and keep right on making them until you achieve your goal, you have the right attitude. You won’t purposely make mistakes, of course. But because you are challenging yourself, you will be aware that mistakes are a natural part of the process.  Having the right attitude toward mistakes, the right view of them, will give you the freedom to pursue your goals with confidence, with minimum distraction, and with your success securely focused in your mind. When you find yourself joyfully moving from one situation to another, using mistakes for learning, growing, and improving, you will know that your Silent Master is beginning to operate in your life.

Freeing Yourself from Limiting States of Mind

Here is an excerpt from my book, SEVEN STEPS TO INNER POWER, where I discuss the topic of how to free our minds from limitations:

While the art of Jung SuWon includes a physical form, it is more than a martial art.  It goes far beyond the hard martial art forms that are strictly of foot and fist, and it is not a sport.  Jung SuWon embraces principles and practices that help you develop your whole being – body, mind, and spirit.  Its mental and spiritual aspects are not separate from its physical form.

Tae Yun Kim

Let me give you a quick example.  In the martial arts, powerful kicks and punches are worthless unless they are properly directed at an appropriate target with the necessary mental focus.  In other words, physical strength is only as good as mental strength.  All the physical strength in the world will not help if your mind is full of fear.  As students practice, they identify what weaknesses are holding them back.  They learn to fight to free themselves from those limitations so they can express their innate power.  As they cultivate determination, confidence, and strength in practicing martial arts, they also apply those same qualities to the challenges in their daily lives.  They are learning to free themselves from whatever is holding their dreams and their future hostage.

Tae Yun Kim

The same principles hold true for you in your everyday life.  You must learn to conquer fear and weakness within you before you can overcome any foe or obstacle outside of yourself.  You must fight for your freedom.  Thus, the purpose of the art of Jung SuWon is to give you practical tools to free yourself from limiting, self-defeating states of mind.
