Here’s an excerpt from my book The Silent Master: Awakening the Power Within:
Life is such a precious gift. But we tend to treat every day as though life is never going to end, like we have an unlimited amount of time to find the happiness we want. As a result, instead of challenging our fears right now, we go on day after day, year after year, making excuses for our failure to accomplish our true desires. Good intentions don’t seem to be enough to make big changes in your life. All you have to do is think about all the New Year’s resolutions you’ve made in the past, and you realize how good intentions alone aren’t sufficient to introduce changes. Making real and lasting changes requires that you make a commitment and take constructive action!
Unfortunately, we tend to get comfortable with our fears and limitations. Think about those times when your eyes adjusted to a semi-dark room. You thought you could see well enough in the darkness. But when the light went on, you suddenly realized how dark it was before. And didn’t the light also hurt? It was uncomfortable to adjust to the new light. In the same way, we can get so used to the darkness of our fears, and so comfortable, that we come to prefer the darkness of fear over the light of our true self and true happiness. Then we may find ourselves drifting from day to day with an attitude that says “maybe tomorrow–or maybe someday–my life will work out.”
But our time on this earth is eventually going to end. We don’t have an unlimited amount of time to simply wait for “someday” to come along. In fact, none of us know the exact amount of time left in our lives. The willingness to wait endlessly for “someday” causes us to waste precious time, and prevents us from taking action that could truly bring about the good we desire.
